The Tennessee State's men basketball program is continuing to reap benefits from the Memphis area with the addition of its latest player from the Bluff City, Mississippi State transfer Jerrell Houston.

Houston, a 6-8, 210-pound forward, has enrolled at TSU for the spring semester and will be eligible for play with the Tigers at the completion of the fall semester in 2006. He will be a sophomore in eligibility for the Tigers.

As a redshirt freshman at Mississippi State in 2005-06, he played in 13 games, making one start. He played in his last game for the Bulldogs on Jan. 14. He averaged 2.3 points and 2.2 rebounds in his brief tenure for the Southeastern Conference school.

"Jerrell is an athletic forward and we are delighted to have him join our program," said TSU head coach Cy Alexander. "He was a highly regarded prospect out of Memphis, and we are pleased to add another player from that city to our program."

At Memphis East High, he was tabbed as one of the top prospects in the city as well as Tennessee. He was a three-year starter and two-time all-district performer for coach Reginald Mosby, following in the footsteps of ex-Memphis East graduates and former collegiate standouts Tony Harris of the University of Tennessee, University of Memphis' Cedric Henderson, and Mississippi State University backcourt performer Greg Lockhart.

Houston was voted team MVP after averaging around 16 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and three assists per game as a prep senior in helping lead the Mustangs to a 16-10 record. He was named to The Commercial Appeal¹s 2003-04 Boys Class AAA All-Metro team, in addition to earning honorable mention status by The Associated Press. Houston was rated 103rd among the nation¹s top high school seniors by The Hoop Scoop and ranked 106th nationally by RivalsHoops.com.

During the summer in 2005, Houston helped Sports Reach to a 7-0 record during a goodwill tour of the Far East. He averaged 12.6 ppg and 6.0 rpg.
